Planning an MBA/PGP at an IIM? Alongside CAT percentile and cut-offs, it helps to know how many seats each institute offers and how they are divided across categories. This guide gives an indicative category-wise seat matrix for the flagship two-year MBA/PGP programmes of the IIMs for the 2026–28 batch.
Note: “General” here means Open/Unreserved seats. EWS and PwD reservations are separate considerations, so General + OBC + SC + ST will not necessarily equal total seats.

Figures marked ≈ are estimates based on reported 2026–28 flagship intake figures and standard reservation percentages. They are not officially notified category-wise vacancies.
How the Category Seats Are Calculated
- General (Open/Unreserved): approximately 40.5% of total seats
- OBC-NCL: 27%
- SC: 15%
- ST: 7.5%
- EWS: the remaining 10%
- PwD: a horizontal reservation that cuts across categories, so it is not an additional 5% of seats
Key Observations
- IIM Lucknow (559) and IIM Bangalore (541) have the largest estimated intakes in this matrix, followed by IIM Kozhikode (499), IIM Indore and IIM Mumbai (487 each) and IIM Calcutta (483).
- IIM Ahmedabad’s flagship PGP intake is estimated at 414 seats.
- Among the established institutes, IIM Ranchi has the smallest intake (220); IIM Guwahati, as a new campus, is listed at 70 seats.
What This Means for CAT Aspirants
Seat numbers are only one part of the picture. Actual admission depends on your CAT percentile, academic profile, work experience, diversity factors, and each IIM’s own shortlisting and selection process. Always confirm final seat details from the official IIM admission notifications before making decisions.
