MBA/PGDM Entrance Exams 2027: CAT, XAT, SNAP, NMAT, CMAT, MAT Dates & Which Exam You Should Take

10 October 2026  |  Blog  |  MBA Entrance Exams 2027, PGDM Admission, CAT 2026, XAT 2027, SNAP 2026, NMAT 2026, CMAT 2027, MAT, MBA Exam Dates

Planning to start an MBA or PGDM in 2027? Then the next few months are the most important of your preparation journey. Most top B-schools in India select students on the basis of an entrance exam score, followed by a group discussion, written ability test and personal interview. Some deadlines have already passed and others are only weeks away, so knowing which exams exist, who should take them, and when they happen can save you a full year.

In this guide, we cover the major MBA/PGDM entrance exams for 2027 admissions, why each one matters, and the latest dates available as of 10 October 2026.

Urgent: CAT 2026 registration has already closed, and NMAT by GMAC registration is scheduled to close on 10 October 2026 (today). If you have not registered for these, check the official websites immediately. The XAT, SNAP and MAT December sessions are still open.

Why Should You Take an MBA Entrance Exam?

An entrance exam is not just a formality. Here is why it matters:

  • It is the gateway to good B-schools. IIMs, XLRI, SPJIMR, Symbiosis, NMIMS, IIFT and hundreds of other institutes shortlist candidates using exam scores.
  • It keeps selection merit-based. A strong percentile can open doors regardless of your college or stream.
  • One score, many colleges. A single score can be used for several institutes, so one good attempt gives you multiple options.
  • It strengthens your profile for scholarships and better placements. Top-percentile candidates often receive fee waivers and get better programme choices.
  • It builds the skills the programme needs. Quantitative ability, logical reasoning, reading comprehension and decision making are exactly what an MBA demands.
  • It gives you backup options. Taking more than one exam protects you if a single exam goes badly.

Major MBA / PGDM Entrance Exams for 2027 Admissions

1. CAT (Common Admission Test)

Conducted by: IIM Indore (for CAT 2026). Mode: Computer-based test, 120 minutes, held in three sessions.

Why take it: CAT is India's most important MBA exam. It is the entry point to the IIMs and is also accepted by many other top institutes. IIFT has also stopped conducting its own entrance test and now shortlists candidates on the basis of CAT scores, so one CAT attempt covers both the IIMs and IIFT. Take CAT if you are aiming for the best brand names and are ready to prepare seriously.

Key dates: Exam on 29 November 2026. Admit cards from 4 November 2026. Registration ran from 3 August and closed on 22 September 2026 (after an extension), with no further extension promised. Results are expected in early January 2027.

2. XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test)

Conducted by: XLRI Jamshedpur. Mode: Computer-based test, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Why take it: XAT is accepted by XLRI and a large number of other B-schools (reports mention 250+). It includes a Decision Making section that tests judgement, which is why many aspirants treat it as a strong second shot alongside CAT. If you want XLRI, XAT is compulsory.

Key dates: Registration from 15 July 2026 to 6 December 2026. Exam on 3 January 2027. Application fee Rs. 2,300. Results are expected in the last week of January 2027.

3. SNAP (Symbiosis National Aptitude Test)

Conducted by: Symbiosis International University. Mode: Computer-based test; you can attempt it up to three times.

Why take it: SNAP is the gateway to Symbiosis institutes such as SIBM Pune, SCMHRD and SIIB. Three attempts mean you can improve your score. Registration is first-come, first-served for test dates and cities, so applying early gives you better choices.

Key dates: Registration from 21 August to 25 November 2026. Tests on 13, 19 and 26 December 2026. Fee Rs. 2,550 per test plus Rs. 1,000 per programme and applicable taxes. Result on 12 January 2027.

4. NMAT by GMAC

Conducted by: GMAC (for NMIMS and 20+ business schools). Mode: Computer-based test taken at a test centre within a long exam window; up to three attempts are allowed.

Why take it: NMAT offers flexibility. You choose your test date, can retake the exam, and see your scorecard quickly. It is ideal if you want NMIMS and other private B-schools and prefer a lower-pressure format than a single-day exam. Remember that NMAT registration alone is not an application to colleges; you must apply separately to each institute.

Key dates: Registration from 20 August to 10 October 2026. Slot scheduling until 22 October 2026. Exam window 2 November to 20 December 2026. Retake registration from 3 November to 17 December 2026. Fee Rs. 3,000 plus taxes.

5. CMAT (Common Management Admission Test)

Conducted by: National Testing Agency (NTA). Mode: Computer-based test, once a year.

Why take it: CMAT is accepted for AICTE-approved MBA/PGDM programmes across India and is a practical option for students targeting good colleges beyond the top tier, with no minimum percentage requirement set by NTA according to current reports.

Key dates: Exam date announced as 7 February 2027. The registration schedule and notification were still awaited at the time of the latest reports, and registration is expected to open in October to November 2026. Watch cmat.nta.nic.in.

6. MAT (Management Aptitude Test)

Conducted by: All India Management Association (AIMA). Mode: Paper-based and computer-based, held four times a year (February, May, September, December).

Why take it: MAT is one of the easiest exams to fit into your schedule because of its multiple sessions. It is accepted by hundreds of B-schools and works well as a backup or for candidates who missed other deadlines.

Key dates (December 2026 session): Registration opened on 28 September 2026. Paper-based test: registration closes 14 December, exam on 20 December 2026. Computer-based test: registration closes 21 December, exam on 27 December 2026. Fees range from Rs. 2,300 to Rs. 4,000 depending on the mode. Dates for the 2027 sessions (such as February) are yet to be announced.

7. MAH-MBA/MMS-CET (Maharashtra)

Conducted by: State CET Cell, Maharashtra. Mode: Computer-based test with 200 questions in 150 minutes.

Why take it: If you want to study in Maharashtra (Mumbai, Pune and other cities), this exam gives access to 300+ MBA/MMS institutes through a centralised admission process, with a share of seats open to All India candidates.

Key dates: Not officially announced yet. Based on earlier cycles, registration is expected around January to February 2027 and the exam between March and May 2027. Treat these as tentative.

8. Other Routes to Know

  • IIFT (MBA-IB / MBA-BA): No separate exam. Admission is based on your CAT score, followed by GD/PI. Applications are expected to open around October to December 2026, so register for CAT-linked processes carefully and check the IIFT website.
  • TISS: TISS now uses CUET-PG for its programmes. The CUET-PG 2027 exam is tentatively scheduled across March 2027, with registration dates yet to be announced.
  • ATMA and GMAT: ATMA (by AIMS) is accepted by many private B-schools and is held in multiple sessions. GMAT is useful for global programmes and a few Indian schools. Check their official sites for current schedules.

Smart Preparation Tips

  1. Do not rely on one exam. Plan to take two or three, such as CAT + XAT + SNAP, since their patterns overlap heavily.
  2. Master the common core. Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension are tested almost everywhere.
  3. Take mock tests regularly and analyse every mistake. Speed and accuracy improve through analysis, not just practice.
  4. Register early. Test slots and cities for SNAP and NMAT are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis.
  5. Start GD/PI preparation early. Your exam score only gets you the interview call. Current affairs, your academic background and work experience matter in the final selection.
  6. Verify eligibility. Most exams require a bachelor's degree (generally with at least 50% marks, with relaxation for reserved categories), but each institute sets its own criteria.

Frequently Asked Questions

I missed CAT 2026 registration. Can I still get an MBA in 2027?

Yes. XAT, SNAP, MAT, CMAT, NMAT (if you registered in time) and MAH CET are all still available or upcoming, and many reputed B-schools accept these scores.

Can I take more than one exam?

Absolutely. Most serious aspirants take two to four exams to maximise their options.

Is registering for an exam the same as applying to a college?

No. For exams like NMAT, SNAP and others, you need to apply separately to each institute or programme you want to join.

Dates in this post are based on information available on 10 October 2026 from the official exam bodies and published reports. Several schedules (CMAT, MAH CET, CUET-PG, MAT 2027 sessions and IIFT) are tentative or awaiting official notification, and deadlines can be extended or revised. Always confirm on the official website of each exam before registering.
