| NEP 2020,4-Year UG,Higher Education,University,Reform
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 introduced major reforms in higher education. By 2026, most central universities have implemented the 4-year UG programme. Here is what students MUST know.
KEY CHANGES IN 4-YEAR UG:
1. MULTIPLE EXIT OPTIONS:
- After 1 year: Certificate
- After 2 years: Diploma
- After 3 years: Bachelor's Degree
- After 4 years: Bachelor's with Honours (with Research)
2. CHOICE-BASED CREDIT SYSTEM (CBCS):
- Students can choose courses across departments (e.g., Physics student can study Music, Psychology, etc.)
- Major + Minor combinations possible (e.g., Major in Maths + Minor in Computer Science)
3. RESEARCH IN UG:
- 4-year UG with research-track lets you go directly to PhD (no Master's required)
- Saves 2 years compared to old 3-year UG + 2-year PG path
4. MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH:
- Liberal Arts focus
- Vocational + Skill courses included
- Internships and apprenticeships compulsory
UNIVERSITIES OFFERING 4-YEAR UG (2026):
- All Central Universities (DU, JNU, BHU, etc.) via CUET
- IITs (already had 4-year B.Tech)
- Top Private: Ashoka, Krea, FLAME, OP Jindal
- State Universities: Many adopting (varies state to state)
PROS:
- Better employability with research/internship experience
- Direct PhD entry saves time
- Multidisciplinary skills appreciated by industry
- International degree compatibility (3+1 year UG global standard)
CONS:
- Extra 1 year of college fees
- Not all universities accept the new degree (older job notifications still ask for 3-year UG)
- Career gap year if you change mind
STRATEGY FOR JHARKHAND STUDENTS:
If you target government job/civil services → 3-year UG is enough (most exams require Graduation only)
If you want PhD/research/abroad → 4-year UG with Honours is better
If you target IIM/private sector → Either works; performance matters more
